Why a Mother’s Unhealthy Attachment to Her Kids St

May 17th, 2012 — 3:24pm

Two years ago, French feminist Elisabeth Badinter wrote a book pointing out how women’s over-intensive parenting style was setting the movement back decades – The Conflict: How Modern Motherhood Sets Back The Cause Of Women.

Last week her book was finally published in English and has started ruffling feathers outside of France.

The style of motherhood that enrages Badinter is one that all vaguely aspirational female British graduates will recognise. Even if, like me, you’ve yet to have children.

It’s a labour-intensive, on-demand and all-consuming ‘natural’ approach replica watches, involving years of breastfeeding, organic ‘everything’ and indulging in selfless devices such as ‘co-sleeping’, which Badinter argues keep women leashed to the crib years after they should have chucked the kid in daycare, wiped off the sick, and gone back to work.

Now, Badinter is a 68-year-old millionaire granny, who comes in contact with uber-moms who puree homegrown asparagus for their kids’ breakfasts – so I’m not sure she’s the person to lecture my mates on how to raise their kids.

But still, her arguments rang a strange little bell in my head.

I’ve been surprised – among my own friends – how much of them are ‘looking forward’ to having a baby. And replica watches, I’m not just talking about the biological clock doing some serious hormonal damage by turning walks in the park into toddler-stalking sessions. No, They’re looking forward to being away from work – and basically from their life as they know it.

I’ve lost count of the times I’ve heard: “I just can’t wait for a year off” as my friends contemplate the impending loss of professional independence, career prospects and financial security. It’s as though, when women hit their early thirties replica watches, maternity ‘leave’ suddenly becomes the equivalent of middle-class gap year. And it’s no coincidence that this coincides with a certain sense of career stagnation.

After a near decade of post-university striving, I might have assumed, among my opinionated, brilliant talented, utterly fearless female friends, there would be a certain reluctance to accept such an apparent setback as childbirth – but that’s absolutely not the case.

What years in the job market have actually given these women is a valuable lesson in the evils of work. The vaulting ambition of their youth has been replaced by the very real knowledge that much of professional life is dull, repetitive and frustrating, with little reward.

After years of jumping from one office to another in search of ‘the one’, all they really have to show for their lot are semi-satisfying, enormously demanding day jobs, which allow them to purchase tiny homes, with vast mortgages, nowhere near decent schools – and the prospect of more of the same if they go straight back after the birth. Oh, and of course, there’s that baby to juggle.

However, in the garden of sweet maternity leave Eden, complete spiritual satisfaction, via the love of an innocent child, is apparently on offer. Never mind semi-poverty – can it be worse than working for a baby boomer boss who doesn’t know what Twitter is?

This idea that women are ‘putting their children first’ is entirely misleading, it seems to me. Women are merely putting work very firmly second.

Groupon Smacks Naysayers With Earnings Over Foreca

May 17th, 2012 — 3:07pm

Groupon on Monday announced revenues that topped the company’s prior forecast as well as analyst expectations.

The Chicago-based company, which has had a bumpy road of late Tattoo Gun Set, said that it took in $559.3 million in revenue during the first quarter 2012, compared with $295.5 million a year ago. Operating income was $39.6 million, including an expense of $28 million related to non-cash stock-based compensation.

The company had said to expect revenue of up to $550 million, and net income from operations of up to $35 million.

“We are pleased to report a record quarter that demonstrates our progress in unlocking the opportunity in local commerce for merchants and customers worldwide,” CEO Andrew Mason said in a statement.

The company posted a per-share loss of two cents, though excluding various items, it would have earned two cents per share, in line with analysts’ forecasts.

The report comes as the deal-making service faced tough times as it has had to restate fourth quarter earnings amid what it said were a large number of post-holiday returns. In the aftermath, the company has shuffled around its board of directors, bringing in some new outside expertise.

In a letter to shareholders earlier this month, Mason defended the company’s efforts to move quickly in a fast-changing market.

Looking forward, Groupon said to expect second quarter revenue of between $550 million and $590 million, with income from operations in the range of $25 million and $45 million.

In slides accompanying the earnings report Tattoo Supplies, Groupon noted that its customer base continues to grow Tattoo Guns, with 36.9 million active customers versus 33.7 million a quarter earlier. Marketing spend as a percentage of revenue, meanwhile, dropped to 21 percent from 32 percent in the same period.

The company’s stock has lost as much as half its value since going public late last year at $20 a share. However, shares traded up strongly on Monday ahead of the earnings report. Just before the close of regular trading, shares were at $11.63, up $1.73, or more than 17 percent.

When Volunteers Become Voluntold

May 17th, 2012 — 3:06pm

Corporate volunteer programs offer such a multitude of benefits that they sometimes seem beyond reproach. When these programs are executed well, employees get to participate in meaningful work outside of the office that is recognized and supported by their employers; companies earn the appreciation of their employees and communities; and nonprofits benefit from added manpower — especially if it comes in the form of skills-based volunteering.

But as corporate volunteerism becomes commonplace in workplaces across the world, there’s one word that no one wants to hear: voluntold.

Here’s how Dictionary Slang defines “voluntold”:

When someone “volunteers” someone else for something so that the other person really doesn’t have a choice. (My boss voluntold me for the United Way Campaign.)

To be told that you have been volunteered for something. Volunteered without your express consent or knowledge. (I was voluntold for the charity event at my fraternity house by my brother.)

When a person is not given an option to volunteer; instead, they are told that they must. (When my friend decided not to volunteer to help set up for the sports banquet, he was voluntold by his boss that he should.)

Forcibly volunteered. A task that was once voluntary has now been ordered to you. (“You slack ass ensigns. Since none of you are going to volunteer, consider yourselves all voluntold. See you tomorrow morning at 0600.”)

Not volunteering for something but then being told by someone with a higher authority to do it. (Adult: Who would you like to volunteer paint the fence today? *No-one answers. Adult: OK Billy you’re going to it. Teenager 2: You just got voluntold.)

Voluntold is also less commonly referred to as “mandateering,” or mandatory volunteering.

You get the picture.

Volun-technology Saves The Day

Whatever name it goes by Tattoo Machine Prices, voluntelling your employees defeats the purpose of volunteering. While office administrators understandably want their program’s participation rates to be high, workers should never feel pressured or, worse, ordered to participate in corporate volunteer programs. Whether your program asks workers to align behind the company’s social mission or it supports the individual causes your employees care about, increasing your program’s participation rates is best accomplished through creative tools that make volunteering more accessible and appealing.

Forget voluntelling; think voluntechnology. Businesses can better promote volunteer and giving programs if they’re using sophisticated volunteer management software that links social media tools to volunteering Tattoo Machines And Supplies, uses mobile applications to feature volunteer opportunities in real-time, creates high visibility internally and externally for campaigns and promotes and manages such volunteering incentives as dollars for doers Tattoo Machine Supply, matching and fundraising competitions.

Keeping your program modern, creative and easy to engage with will help get employees interested in volunteering and ward off any need to become voluntells.

Xenia board OKs job changes

May 16th, 2012 — 7:48am

10:35 PM Monday, May 14, 2012

The Xenia Board of Education by a vote of 3 to 2 approved the outsourcing of its transportation, custodial and maintenance, and information technology departments at its meeting Monday night.

School board members Lee Rose and Dr. Robert Dillaplain, who had several financial questions for district business and technology director Christy Fielding, voted against the proposal.

Board president William Spahr, vice president Steven Alex and member Barbara Stafford were in favor.

With the approval, they will move forward and contract with Cincinnati-based First Student Inc. for busing; Waibel Energy Systems Inc., a Vandalia firm, for custodial and maintenance services; and Northwest Ohio Computer Association for IT work.

Dave Crosley, general manager at Waibel, said his company works with Centerville, Kettering and Miamisburg school districts to provide HVAC services. He said the scope of services provided to Xenia will be larger, but not unusual.

“Outsourcing can be done in many different ways, and is scalable to the needs of the district,” Crosley said. “If they’re looking at ways to save money Emilio Pucci Dresses sale, we can work with them.”

The idea of outsourcing support staff positions was first broached by the district last year, and nearly led to a support professionals union strike in October.

District employees reportedly will get first consideration for these positions, and have been offered hiring sessions Wednesday.

Mark Manley, district spokesman and teachers union president, said the district would retain its fleet of buses in case it needs to resume transportation management.

This outsourcing is on top of cuts made earlier this month that include laying off 30 staff members, including seven teachers.

These combined salaried and benefit cuts would total more than $10.5 million since 2010.

District officials said an additional $2.6 million in budget cuts would be made Christian Audigier Clothing sale, if its 1.5 percent earned income tax replacement levy does not pass in August. The district has made $8.6 million in budget reductions since 2010.

Also at the meeting, the board approved the hiring of Matthew Louis as athletic director.

Spy ShotsMercedes-Benz AMG SLS taking shape

May 15th, 2012 — 2:47pm

Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS – Click above for a high-res image gallery

The gestation of the Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS has spanned almost two years, and what started with a Viper-bodied mule Tattoo Supplies, a few drawings and a full-scale interior mock-up has evolved into this, the latest super coupe prototype caught outside AMG Headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany.

Although there’s still plenty of camo obscuring the finer points of the SLS’ design, the shape is obviously evolving into something similar to the highly-stylized sketches revealed in New York. The elongated hood stands in stark contrast to the tiny trunk, while the short overhangs lend a bit more balance to the disproportionate profile. A few of the smaller details can be seen peering through the camo, including the front LED running lamps, trapezoidal dual exhausts and vents aft of the front wheels and on the hood towards the windshield. The massive piece of vinyl covering the center part of the grille will undoubtedly house a sizable three-pointed star, while out back, the sculpted fenders appear to have lost some of their edge (compared to this rendering), and instead rely on a set of bulbous tail-lamps and a small spoiler to shape the boot.

The SLS is expected to debut at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, complete with a 6.2-liter V8 putting out 563 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, with a curb weight of 3 Tattoo Supplies,571 pounds and a price tag north of $200k.

Do Egyptians Play Baseball

May 14th, 2012 — 12:56am

Read more of Slate’s coverage of the Egyptian protests.

An Egyptian soldier prays with protesters

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has replaced his Cabinet and promised not to run for re-election, but protesters continue to demand his resignation. The uprising raises a slew of questions for the Explainer.

Some Egyptian protesters  are carrying baseball bats, according to various reports. Is baseball popular in Egypt?

No. Egyptians may have been the  first to play a game resembling baseball, which they called “saker-hemat” (“batting the ball”) in the 15th century B.C., but the sport has a minimal presence, if any, in modern Egypt. The country didn’t appear on the International Baseball Federation’s  2010 world rankings. And the country has never competed in the  Summer Olympics’ baseball tournament. It’s telling that the most famous baseball game played in Egypt pitted the Chicago White Stockings against an all-star team called All-Americas  in front of the pyramids. The game, part of Albert Spalding’s world exhibition tour of 1888 and 1889, occurred between stops in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) and Italy. There haven’t been any Egyptian-born players in the history of Major League Baseball, but Spalding’s All-Americas did field a pitcher known as “The Egyptian”—  John Healy Replica DKNY Dresses, who was born in Cairo, Ill.

So where are protesters getting the bats? It’s difficult to say. CNN’s Ben Wedeman  tweeted from Cairo: “Just saw blue fiat entering main tv building in Maspiro when guards opened trunk, full of baseball bats.” It’s also possible that these supposed baseball bats are actually just long, tapered sticks, like those in  this photograph.

Some  media outlets  report that Egyptian riot police fired “rubber-coated bullets” on protesters Buy Herve Leger v neck, while  others  refer simply to “rubber bullets.” Are they talking about the same thing?

Probably. As  Emily Yoffe explained  in 2000, “Rubber bullets describe about 75 types of ‘less than lethal’ devices that are designed to deliver a stinging blow that incapacitates but does not kill or penetrate flesh as do regular metal bullets.” The umbrella term covers rounds made entirely from rubber as well as steel bullets covered with rubber.

Design intentions aside Buy Herve Leger gown, rubber bullets can indeed be deadly Replica Chanel Dresses, especially if fired at close range. In Northern Ireland during the 1970s, British forces fired more than 55,000 rubber bullets. About 1 in 18,000 rounds killed someone, and about 1 in 1,100 rounds caused serious injury. Researchers who  analyzed the medical records of 152 people injured by rubber bullets during the Israeli-Arab conflict of October 2000 found that shots to the face and chest were most likely to penetrate the body. Shots to the lower abdomen, back, and limbs—where tissues are the most elastic—were among the least likely to penetrate.

Though Egyptian officials insist that the Suez Canal will remain open, onlookers are concerned that the protests could disrupt the waterway—which connects the Red and Mediterranean seas—and roil oil markets. What else Buy Bandage dresses, besides oil, gets shipped through the Suez?

A lot. Oil tankers account for only about 10 percent of the canal’s traffic. Another 50 percent comes from container ships, which usually carry so-called “finished goods” like televisions and clothes. Other traffic comes from “dry bulk” ships, which carry grain, coal, and other forms of loose cargo Replica Herve leger strapless, as well as from ships carrying liquefied natural and petroleum gas.

The Explainer thanks Tom Zeiler of the University of Colorado at Boulder, and Natasha Boyden of Cantor Fitzgerald. Explainer also thanks reader Beirne Konarski for asking the baseball question.

President Obama and Michelle at a rally in Columbus, Ohio, Sunday

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Two days before Election Day in 2008, Michelle Obama bragged about her husband to a crowd here of 60,000. “Barack has built one of the most powerful political organizations Buy Cheap Replica Panerai Watches, recruiting millions of folks from all different kind of backgrounds. … He has built one of the most powerful political fundraising machines. … Barack has helped to unify a party that some said could not be unified.” He was “more than ready to be the next president of the United States.”

Now that he is president, is the machine ready? That was the question Sunday night as Michelle Obama returned to Columbus with her husband for their first campaign rally since they were here two years ago.

The machine sure looked ready. Some 35,000 people stood at the center of Ohio State University in the cool clear night. “O-H,” said the first lady when she stepped up to the microphone. “I-O,” responded the crowd like it was at a sporting event. “That’s very cool,” she said, impressed with her ability to get the crowd to react so quickly and loudly.

If only Democratic voters would respond so faithfully. The party will need this kind of organizational triumph on Election Day to rescue the two key races in the state, neither of which is looking good. Incumbent Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland is behind Republican John Kasich by an average of six points in the polls. In the race for the U.S. Senate, Democratic Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher trails former Rep. Rob Portman by an average of 18 points.

The evening wasn’t just about Ohio, though. Democrats hope that a show of force here will inspire their voters all over the country to go to the polls in an election where conservatives are highly motivated. The crowd was blasted with light. The event was made for broadcast. A boom camera streamed the event live to the Internet.

Michelle Obama was there to build up her husband Buy Cheap Replica Tonino Lamborghini Watches, not attack his opponents. By adding her to the event, organizers hoped to rekindle the spirit of two years ago Wholesale Replica Chaumet Watches, particularly among first-time college voters. “So tell me something, Ohio. If you are still as fired up and ready to go as you were two years ago, then I know that we can keep bringing about the change that I know Replica Chronoswiss Watches, that we all know, we can keep that American Dream alive,” she said.

Meanwhile in California, Sarah Palin used the first lady’s return to the campaign trail to revive another part of the 2008 campaign. In a rally in San Jose on Thursday, Palin said, “You know, when I hear people say, or had said during the campaign that they’ve never been proud of America, haven’t they met anybody in uniform yet?” As first lady Replica Parmigiani Fleurier Watches, Michelle Obama has tried to be an advocate for military families. But Palin was referring to Michelle Obama’s statement in 2008 that for the first time she was “proud” of her country. (Later Mrs. Obama clarified her remarks to say what she was proud of was the level of political engagement Replica Movado Watches, which was like never before.)
